NEXT COMING OF YESHUA THE MESSIAH

1.0 Introduction

A careful look at Old Testament prophecies shows an underlying assumption of two advents. Micah 5:2 and Isaiah 7:14 predict the first advent. Separately, Isaiah 53:8–9 predicts a suffering and dying Messiah, who will be given life and greatness according to Isaiah 53:11–12. 

Daniel 9:26 describes the Messiah being killed after His appearance. At the same time, prophets such as Zechariah (Zechariah 12:10) say this same “pierced” Messiah will be seen again by His enemies. So the clues are there about the next coming of Messiah.

Many Old Testament prophecies foretell the ultimate triumph of Messiah, which will occur at the next advent. These include statements from the books of Zechariah (Zechariah 9:14–15; 12:10–14; 13:1; 9:14–15); Amos (Amos 9:11–15); Jeremiah (Jeremiah 30:18; 32:44; 33:11, 26); and Joel (Joel 3:1); which describe the Messiah coming in triumph to lead Israel into salvation.

Note that these are in the context of passages such as Deuteronomy 30:3–5 and so are predictions of the time of Messiah’s final victory.

The future return of Messiah to the earth is implied in hundreds of Old Testament prophecies of future judgment on the world and a coming kingdom of righteousness on earth and is explicitly detailed in major New Testament passages.

The last book of the Bible, the Revelation of Yeshua the Messiah, refers specifically to His Next Coming itself (in Chapter 19), and the millennium and future state which follows (in Chapters 20-22).

It’s important to remember that prophecy does not describe the future in the same detail as history describes the past. So, while the prophecies of the Old Testament certainly describe the first and next advents, most early interpretations of these prophecies melded them into a single event.

Particularly during the years leading up to Yeshua’s birth, it was assumed Messiah would be a political/military figure with an immediate worldly kingdom (Luke 19:11). In the light of Yeshua’s ministry, it is possible to understand the true purpose of Messiah and the real nature of His kingdom.

Also, Scripture records Yeshua making direct comparisons to Old Testament prophecies when making His own claims to next advent. For example, His words in Matthew 24:31 and Mark 13:27 parallel the descriptions of Isaiah 52:15 and Isaiah 59—62.

All in all, the Hebrew Scriptures indicate that the Promised One would appear, be cut off, and then reappear in victory. The first advent has occurred; the next is still future. Both the New and Old Testaments predict a second advent of the Messiah.

2.0 The Next Coming of Yeshua the Messiah

The Next Coming of Yeshua the Messiah uses a different Greek word: parousia. This word refers to the physical return of Messiah to the earth, and is used four times in Matthew 24. Greek dictionaries and lexicons state that this word can refer to a person’s actual presence or his/her arrival.

The word parousia is used 24 times in the Bible: Matthew 24:3,27,37,39; 1 Corinthians 15:23; 16:17; 2 Corinthians 7:6,7; 10:10; Philippians 1:26; 2:12; 1 Thessalonians 2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23; 2 Thessalonians 2:1,8,9; James 5:7,8; 2 Peter 1:16; 3:4,12; and 1 John 2:28.

Thus, when differentiating between the Rapture and the Next Coming, it is a strong assumption that the word parousia refers exclusively to the Next Coming.

Generally speaking, those who affirm a literal first advent, a virgin birth of Yeshua the Messiah, a literal death and resurrection of Messiah also hold to a literal Next Advent.

3.0 How, when and where Yeshua the Messiah will return to earth?

How, when and where Yeshua the Messiah will return to earth are often misunderstood. What does the Bible say about the next coming of King of Kings and Lord of Lords? The book of Revelation twice describes Yeshua as “Lord of lords” and “King of kings” when He returns to earth (Revelation 17:14; Revelation 19:16).

At this time Yeshua will be the King ruling over the Kingdom of God here on earth. Yet the details of how Yeshua will arrive to assume this role are confusing to many.

When one begins studying the next coming of Yeshua to this earth, he or she soon runs into multiple opinions about whether Messiah will return prior to the Tribulation, during the Tribulation, or after the Tribulation. It all gets quite confusing! So what do the Scriptures actually say?

3.1 How the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will come?

The Scriptures repeatedly state that Messiah’s return to earth will be visible to all. The book of Revelation, which is “the Revelation of Yeshua the Messiah, which God gave Him to show His servants” (Revelation 1:1), addresses this very point.

“Behold, He [Messiah] is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen” (verse 7).

Earlier, during His earthly ministry, Yeshua had also answered His disciples’ questions about how He would return. In His Olivet Prophecy (recorded for us in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21) He said, “For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:27).

Yeshua added: “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (verse 30).

The principle we see in these passages is that Yeshua’s return to earth will be visible to all. Furthermore, as we’ve already noted, His return to earth will be marked by the piercing sound of a trumpet. The return of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to the earth will not be a quiet, secretive event!

3.2 When the King of Kings will come?

Through the Old Testament prophet Joel, God revealed that great cosmic disturbances would precede Messiah’s return. As the prophet wrote, “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD” (Joel 2:31).

Adding to this teaching, Yeshua explained: “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:29-30).

From these passages, we see that Yeshua will come after these heavenly signs appear. Additionally, Yeshua said that these signs will occur “immediately after the tribulation.” Thus, Messiah’s return will come after the Tribulation.

One of the first things Yeshua will do upon His return is to restore the Kingdom of God here on earth. The time when Messiah assumes authority over all nations is found in the explanation of end-time events in the book of Revelation.

“Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!’” (Revelation 11:15).

Yeshua stated regarding His return: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (Matthew 24:36).

3.3 Where the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will come?

Occasionally, there are rumors that Yeshua the Messiah has returned to one part of the world or another. While naïve people can become excited about such news, the Bible clearly tells us where Yeshua will return.

Speaking of this time when Messiah will come to this earth once again, Zechariah prophesied: “Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, and your spoil will be divided in your midst.

For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; the city shall be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

“Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south” (Zechariah 14:1-4).

The location where Yeshua will return is the Mount of Olives, a mountain ridge east of the old city of Jerusalem. When He does return, this mountain ridge will be split apart. An authentic report announcing Messiah’s return will match this criterion.

3.4 What the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will do?

While the technical details of Messiah’s return are interesting to study, what He will do once He assumes authority over the entire earth is what will be most exciting for humanity.

Commenting on this wonderful time to come, Isaiah wrote: “Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.

“Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

He shall judge between the nations, and rebuke many people; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore” (Isaiah 2:2-4).

4.0 Conclusion

The Bible reveals that after his next coming, Messiah will reign upon the earth for 1,000 years—a period of time referred to as the Millennium. His reign as King of Kings will be marked by the healing of diseases, abundant prosperity, universal peace and, most importantly, the opportunity for people to live God’s way of life and have their sins forgiven.
